Richard Benge 2Richard Benge is the director of Arts Access Aotearoa, a not for profit in Aotearoa New Zealand. His organisation works to provide inclusive access to the arts and culture for all people irrespective (for example) of disability, age, ethnicity or circumstance.

In his previous role Richard worked for the Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy in Wellington in the cultural specialist role. The activities of his section were designed to reach local kiwi audiences with specific
information important to the United States using multiple platforms and methods. The challenge was to cut through the regular news cycle to develop deeper mutual understanding and share key messages that people could trust. He was six weeks into that role when 9/11 happened and he worked in a team to devise the activities and authentic communications to New Zealanders at a time of tragedy and urgency. In his presentation Richard will talk about ways to reach and include communities in communications that lead to individual and community empowerment and he will review the successful communications and actions used by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern immediately following the 13 March terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch.
