About Us - Objectives & Rationale

Objectives

The objectives of the Company are:

  1. To develop an appreciation of Emergency Media and Public Affairs professionals through peer, agency and academic recognition of the discipline;

  2. To provide a common meeting ground for practitioners and researchers for discussions on various aspects of Emergency Media and Public Affairs;

  3. To provide a forum for discussion on topics of common concern to all Emergency Media and Public Affairs professionals in order to:

    1. Allow researchers to share their findings with practitioners and other researchers,
    2. Benchmark approaches to Emergency Media and Public Affairs,
    3. Generate further ideas from practical experience; and
    4. Work toward identifying best-practice in all aspects of Emergency Media and Public Affairs.
  4. To conduct an annual Emergency Media and Public Affairs Conference;

  5. To work toward establishing a ‘Centre of Excellence’ for Emergency Media and Public Affairs through promotion of the discipline to key agencies and academic institutions.

Rationale

The aims of Emergency Media and Public Affairs are:

  • To benchmark the best media liaison and public affairs responses to disaster across Australia and to share lessons learned by practitioners and researchers
  • To provide ample opportunity for discussion on topics of common concern to all practitioners so that ideas can be generated and solutions canvassed
  • To provide a common meeting ground for practitioners and researchers for discussions on various aspects of emergency response and action plans
  • To allow researchers to share their findings with practitioners and other researchers.

EMPA was formed in 2006 from a discussion between the University of Southern Queensland and the Queensland Department of Emergency Services.
